History of Federal Premium Ammuniton

The Federal Cartridge Company was started in 1916 in Anoka, Minnesota, as the Federal Cartridge and Bicycle Company by Harry and Lewis Sherman. Due to several internal issues, the company was shut down in 1920. Charles L. Horn bought the company in 1922 and began building the company it is today. In order to better promote his product he began distributing his product through gas stations, grocery stores and barber shops. It was with those marketing skills that Mr. Horn eventually was awarded an $87 million dollar contract in 1941 to provide ammunition for the U.S. Government. Federal continued to produce ammunition for the government through the 20th century, playing an important role in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict.

In 1977, Charles Horn retired and turned the company over to his son William. William continued the growth of the company by increasing marketing efforts and introducing the Premium line of rifle and shotshell ammunition. In 1985, the company was sold to a group of private investors and eventually was bought by Alliant Techsystems.

Federal Premium Ammunition operates out of its plant in Anoka, Minnesota, employing almost 1,000 workers. Here they produce the entire Federal line of rifle, pistol, shotgun and rimfire ammunition. The popular Hydra-shok pistol ammunition continues to be made here, as well as the Nosler and Sierra bulleted rifle ammunition. Federal continues to innovate in the ammunition market with its new Guard Dog ammunition for handguns, V-shock rifle ammo, and Black Cloud shotgun shells. Federal Premium Ammunition will no doubt continue producing their high quality ammo long into the future.
