History of 5.56x45mm Ammunition

Developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s after extensive research into small caliber, high-velocity (SCHV) projectiles, 5.56x45 has become one of the world's most popular centerfire cartridges. It is used by police and military agencies around the globe, as well as a growing number of private citizens in the United States.

The first 5.56x45 loads featured 55 grain full metal jacket bullets at over 3200 feet per second out of the barrel of the then-new AR-15 rifle, which later became the M16. Since that time, a number of other projectiles have been used, including the steel penetrator tip M855 and barrier-blind Mk318, both of which are 62gr bullets. Also, Sierra MatchKing 77gr BTHP, or OTM, bullets are used in the Mk262 precision marksman ammunition.

Due to its worldwide popularity, the 5.56x45 cartridge has been used by a number of firearm manufacturers. Colt, Armalite, Bushmaster, Rock River, DPMS, Bravo Company, LMT, Spike's Tactical, Daniel Defense, Heckler & Koch, FN, Beretta, Sig, and LWRC, among others, have produced semi-automatic and automatic rifles chambered in 5.56x45.
