History of .460 Smith and Wesson Magnum Ammunition
In 2005 Hornady and Smith & Wesson combined efforts and introduced the .460 S&W Magnum. Based on a longer .454 Casull case, the .460 S&W Magnum was introduced two years after Smith and Wesson rolled out the .500 Magnum. Although it seems that this would be a pretty questionable marketing call, the .460 S&W Magnum offers a few things the .500 does not. The recoil is much more manageable as compared to the .500. The energy delivered by the .460 is only about 10% less at the muzzle. Considering that the muzzle energy of both cartridges meets in the 2900 foot pound range, there is not much difference in the two when considering bullet energy needed for hunting at pistol shooting distances. The .460 S&W Magnum is also versatile when it comes to cartridge selection. Since it was based on the .454 Casull case, most revolvers will fire the .454 Casull, .45 Colt and .45 Schofield cartridges as well.
The .460 S&W is also has great versatility in ammunition choices. Many manufacturers have included the .460 in their lineup. Hornady has a load using their SST bullet that uses the Flex Tip expanding technology. Buffalo Bore has 300 grain jacketed flat nose and 360 grain flat nose bullets that they load to their specialty higher pressure loads. Federal offers ammunition with the Barnes 275 grain XPB bullet and a 260 grain Fusion bullet. Winchester has a Partition Gold bullet, and a 250 grain reduced recoil load that has a still potent muzzle velocity of 1450 feet per second.
With a heavy bullet moving at a high velocity, the .460 S&W Magnum has the power needed to hunt any large or dangerous game anywhere on the planet. This cartridge is also known for its accuracy and when paired with the right firearm is known to be able to shoot groups less than one inch at 100 yards! When reviewing the numbers, this cartridge is nothing short of impressive. Velocities range from 1500 to over 2300 feet per second with bullet weights commonly found between 200 and 395 grains. These velocities and bullet weights give the cartridge Muzzle energies ranging from 2000 to 2350 foot pounds.
The .460 S&W Magnum offers the shooter a powerful cartridge that extends the effective range of the pistol hunter to unprecedented distances. It also provides excellent accuracy and has a wide variety of bullet designs and loads for it.
