History of .40 Cal (S&W) Ammunition

The .40 S&W was introduced by Winchester and Smith & Wesson in 1990 as a replacement for the 10mm cartridge used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  With the harsh recoil and large grip size, the 10mm was proving to be too much for many agents.  This led to a search for a more controllable cartridge that could be used in existing 9mm frames and was able to pass the penetration tests required by the FBI.  The .40 S&W filled these needs and became wildly popular among the law enforcement and eventually the civilian shooting community.

One of the best attributes of this ammunition is that it is a "middle ground" cartridge, but definitely not a compromise.  It is has more energy than a 9mm, but due to the size of the cartridge, the 9mm pistol of the same size will have a higher ammunition capacity.  When compared to a .45 ACP, the capacity of the.40 is considerably larger, while the average .45 ammo generates more muzzle energy than the average .40.  This combination of factors, plus exhaustive testing by the FBI and numerous other agencies has launched the .40 to prominence among the law enforcement community.  It is also noteworthy that the US Coast Guard has adopted the .40 S&W as its' primary issue side arm.

In the civilian market, the .40 is popular for several reasons. The ammunition is available in a wide variety of bullet weights and designs, and the leading manufacturers are sure to make the .40 one of the first calibers that their new self defense products are introduced in.  The ammunition capacity, energy and manageable recoil are popular for personal defense uses as well as concealed carry  this is seen in the popularity of compact and sub-compact pistols chambered for the .40.  Several manufacturers offer multiple choices in their defensive ammo Hornady, Federal and Magtech are just a few of the manufacturers that offer high quality self defense ammo in .40 S&W.

Steve Northrop ( Fri, 22 Jun 2012 23:04:07 +0000 ) : Bought a Tangfolio.40 taction that came with an additional barrel in 10mm. It shot better out of the box (accuracy) than my Colt Commander that I sunk two grand in.
Ed Conti ( Fri, 22 Jun 2012 23:13:31 +0000 ) : I own a Smith & Wesson M&P 40 an love it. It is a full size and I have no problem carrying it concealed.
Donald Potts ( Sat, 23 Jun 2012 11:58:12 +0000 ) : My loving wife gave me a.40 S&W for valentines day couple years ago and I love it, very accurate easy to handle easy to field strip, quickly became my favorite.
Todd Bell ( Tue, 09 Oct 2012 15:57:41 +0000 ) : I have a Hi point 40 and a S&W M&P 40 Compact both great shooting and accurate the M&P is much lighter for conceal carry. but I like the Hi Point for target shooting.
Frank Woolf ( Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:49:21 +0000 ) : As a previous owner of three 9 mm handguns, I was apprehensive about the 40 S & W cartridge. I will update after I have gone through a couple boxes.
Fred Vanley ( Sun, 10 Feb 2013 01:51:14 +0000 ) : Glock.40, model 27. A great concealed weapon!
John Sheridan ( Sat, 16 Feb 2013 18:47:15 +0000 ) : Get perfect scores on quals & same ammo as duty weapon make ideal backup......fits nicely in ankle holster.
Michael White ( Tue, 02 Apr 2013 01:32:02 +0000 ) : Just acquired a springfield compact 40 cal -any feedback on this weapon?
Jay Wright ( Thu, 18 Apr 2013 01:29:20 +0000 ) : Was real apprehensive of 40 cal. till I used it. Also snubbed my nose at glock till I fired one. Now own several glocks and 40 cal. is my choice. The guns are practically indestructible and I would not like to be on the receiving end of the 40.
Er Mnz ( Thu, 09 Oct 2014 07:02:39 +0000 ) : Went to a store to purchase a 9mm Hi Point, then leaned toward getting a 9mm XD Springfield but ended up coming out with a .40 XD Springfield 9102. Even though many have said the .40 is too high in pressure and it therefore wears out the gun, besides the other downsides, I'm satisfied with my purchase. I don't feel that it recoils slightly more than a 9mm. I used a 9mm several times at the range before purchasing my .40 XD. I also used a 686 S&W 357 Mag. at the range and it was by far the most accurate and easy to use. I was surprisingly able to use only one hand, both the right and left ones, and accurately hit my targets! That will definitely be my next purchase for several reasons. But on the plus side of using the .40, I was amazingly able to land my targets with less recoil and better grouping using hollow points, particularly with Corbon DPX, followed by Winchester's PDX1 Defender ammo. I think high-quality ammo really plays a very large part in the quality of shooting. Shooting FMJs and JHPs are almost like night and day to me when using .40 ammo. Winchester's Ranger Law Enforcement ammo is also very good but Corbin is like the Rolls Royce/Bentley of ammos, PDX1 like the Aston Martin, and the Ranger like the Corvette or Jaguar F-Type of ammo. The other brands I tried are pretty much like the ubiquitous, ordinary German and Japanese luxury cars: adequate but not good enough to compete with the best hollow points. I'd have to say that after firing over 700 rounds through my .40 XD, it's the quality of the cartridge that adds to the logistics of why a particular caliber may be better at times than at others. We have to take all factors into account, not just the usual opinions that even the most well-respected experts talk or write about.

  • knox86 said: "I got 500 rounds about 6 months ago and so far haven't had a single jam or malfunction at the range out of my XDm. could be a little cleaner but i've worse out of new non reman ammo so not much to complain about there. I would shoot this over any blazer/tula any day. "
  • emt59 said: "You came through with ammo on hand when I was having trouble finding it. The ammo was competitively priced along all others."
  • SteveGun357 said: "Only one had a damged jacket. I didnt even load it in the magazine. The other 999 have fired perfectly. That is a 99.9% excellence record with me. Good deal. Could not believe how quickly you shipped."
  • MP 272 said: "Ordered the 1000 rounds - haven't shot any yet. It is clean and well made - great service! I have confidence enough to use it as personal carry! Thanks AmmoNet Dave - Sarasota"
  • gasman said: "A little concerned about reloads, however my concerns soon vanished as the ammo performed flawlessly."
  • Vorbdad said: "Even though this ammo was reloads, we experienced maybe only two jams out of 500 or so rounds shot so far. My brother and I are very happy with our results. Will definitely buy some more. "
  • Steve said: "I was impressed with the service from Ammo.net as well as the timeframe of delivery. The 40 cal MBI FMJ 180 gr. ammo looked good, fired flawlessly, and appears to be fairly clean doing it. I've only fired approximately 30 rds. through my Glock 23 gen 4 so far, but am satisfied with no jamming or ejection problems...would definitely consider in the future. "
  • kwaddell said: "I needed decent target range rounds for my Glock 22. Even though these are reloads not a single round jammed. All of the rounds fired cleanly. We must have gone through 100 - 200 rounds at the range. Good price. Good rounds. Will definitely purchase again."

  • Scott said: "Bought 500 rounds and have gone through approx. 200 and haven't had any issues. The one thing that bothered me slightly was 1 out of every 20 or so rounds was steel cased. It's not enough for me to knock it down a point in the review but it was advertised as "Brass" and it wasn't all brass."
  • Jas said: "Fired all 100 the first time out with 100% success. I didn't notice any difference from shot to shot like in some reloads. Every ejection was smooth and never had a hangup which is most important."
  • Top Shot said: "I went to the range and pumped 100 rounds out and no problems at all. Great value..."
  • The Man said: "pumped 400 rounds through my hand gun with no problems. It was a good deal."
  • The Patriot said: "Used 200 rounds at the range without any problems, Great value."

  • Donnie said: "Went thru 250 rounds over the last 2 weeks with no issues at all. Great ammo and very good price. Gun was a lot cleaner than I anticipated after I shot 130 rounds. Would recommend this ammo to anyone."
  • Lou said: "Good ammo for the price"
  • Davedee said: "I use CCI as my preferred ammo. Have a fussy SIG 22 semi-auto that can only use CCI products. I have no issues with CCI in my other 40 and 9 mm cal. weapons and recommend to others. Also, I share with others when I purchase in bulk so they have an opportunity to try you out. "

  • Joe said: "What a mess, jams, powder build up.... this ammo did everything it could to foul my weapon. I blew threw cheaper Russian AMMO in my Ruger SR40C no issues, cleaning was average. As I closed in on 80 rounds of this Remington ammo you could tell it was going to be a long afternoon, powder all over the muzzle, then the jams started and cleaning took forever! Would not recommend. "

  • Paperbanger said: " Looking for some .40 cal you can feed your pistol with total confidence? Fill your magazines with the HST JHP from Federal! My Sig and I spent an afternoon punching holes with these, along with three other brands. We know there are some brands okay for range practice, because a misfeed or misfire doesn't matter much. But it was clear from the outset that if you carry, these are the guys you want to take with you. Never a misfeed or misfire, and accurate to a gnat's eyelash. I figure if it's my life and perhaps the lives of my loved ones on the line, I'll have enough to worry about without fighting the bad guys and my ammo problems at the same time. "

In a direct comparison, this is the lowest price for exactly the same ammo. The ammo came well packaged in 50-round sets and fired flawlessly. Hard to complain about that."

Would purchase again."
