History of .300 Winchester Short Magnum Ammunition

The .300 Winchester Short Magnum was introduced to the hunting market in 2001. The .300 is part of a series of short magnum cartridges that were rolled out at the beginning of the 21st century by Winchester. These cartridges have met with a positive response for the most part by the hunting community, as they have improved on already legendary cartridges by using updated case design, powders and bullets.

The .300 WSM has a .308 inch diameter bullet and has case dimensions that are similar to most other .308 caliber cartridges. This means that the .300 WSM, like the other cartridges in the Winchester Short Magnum cartridge line, will function in a short action rifle. This makes the action easier and faster to cycle, especially for smaller statured shooters. The most apparent difference from other magnum cartridges is the sharp, 35 degree shoulder angle and the overall short and wide appearance of the cartridge when compared to its larger kin. The advantage of this shape is that it allows for more efficient powder ignition and burning. This translates into less powder needed to achieve the same performance as a larger, heavier recoiling cartridge.

The .300 WSM performs like the .300 Winchester Magnum, the cartridge it was modeled after. Although it does not hold as much powder, it is noted for its ability to take virtually all North American medium and large game, including elk, at long distances. Bullet weights range from 150 grain Soft Points that have a muzzle velocity of 3100 feet per second at the muzzle and over 3600 foot pounds of energy, to 180 grain hollow points that travel at just under 3100 feet per second with over 3800 pounds of energy at the muzzle. Bullet designs include the Power-Shok, Fusion and Power Point bullet, these provide a wide variety of choices for hunters to pick the bullet and weight combination for their precise needs.

The .300 WSM has a lot going for it. The short case provides great performance in a more compact action. This allows more shooters to be able to use the rifle more comfortably and faster. The cartridge design helps provide the same performance as larger cartridges, but with less recoil. Finally, with its market acceptance comes a great choice of ammunition types and manufacturers that will give the shooter the ability to choose the perfect ammo for their needs.
